The narrator Maia Guest, makes this audiobook an enjoyable and smooth listen. I voluntarily giving an honest review an audio copy of this book for the author.

Jan 29, Fred rated it really liked it. Dev is getting ready to welcome the Stepping Out Book Club to here dime store. It was with some trepidation that she is hosting them, another night away from her mother and that the president of the club is the principal, Mrs.

Ziegler, from her old high school. Ziegler has always been able to put the fear of God in Dev. The guest author for the first meeting is Mr.

Quistgaard, who will discuss his latest book of poetry about life in a small town and women. In this book of poetry, is quite malicious both to women in general and the people and life of small towns.

Needless to say, this doesn't go over well with the members of the book club. Three of the members have words with him and one storms out of the meeting.

Very early the next morning Dev receives a call from the police asking here to come to the store and when she arrives she finds out that Quistgaard has been killed behind the store.

Dev starts sleuthing, once again, hoping to get closure for little community and to turn her store back into a store and not a place people come to gawk.

Dev needs to careful as death might lurking on the stairs. On the romance side, Dev has decided not to decide. She has feelings for Jake Del Veechio, but he's now five hours away and she certainly still has feelings for Noah Underwood, even if he did break her after high school.

The agreement is that she will date both of them until she makes up her mind. Yes, it is like putting two mountain goats together, ready to do battle.

I really enjoy this series that gives the reader a good story and interesting characters. And little humor mixed in, too. Looking forward to the next book to see what Dev can get herself into.

Feb 01, ChrisGA rated it really liked it Shelves: This is a cozy mystery about a young, single woman who owns a dime store and creates gift baskets to support herself and her grandmother.

We soon learn that she has a complicated family history with a father who was arrested for manslaughter and a mother who left her with the grandmother and never was heard from again.

This is the third in the series, and I often found myself wondering about the backstory of different events referred to that must have taken place in the first two books.

Evidentl This is a cozy mystery about a young, single woman who owns a dime store and creates gift baskets to support herself and her grandmother.

Evidently, her history with the town is complicated also. She and her grandmother endured years of judgment by former friends when Dev's father was arrested.

She also seems to have been involved in two other murders within the last year prior to the opening of this book. In spite of the cloud she grew up under, she seems to have good friends, two hunky boyfriends, and a good life in the small town.

This book is completely stand-alone--I was just curious to know more. The mystery part was intriguing. The romance part was propelled by "naughty" thoughts, kisses and groping.

My favorite part was her obvious love of, and sense of responsibility toward, her grandmother. She is a very likeable character, and her two beaus are both very appealing.

Totally beside the point, this book is a bonanza for anyone trying to complete a A-Z character reading challenge. Zizi, Xylia, Winkie, Yale and others all play a role in the story.

I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway, but the thoughts expressed are mine. Feb 01, Ronna rated it really liked it Shelves: I got this free from a blogger.

This is my honest review. Devereaux Sinclair has her hands full running her "five and dime" store in Missouri, and keeping track of her Gran who is loosing some of her memory.

On the other hand, she has the good fortune to have two hunky boyfriends who both want her full attention. In this book--third in the Devereaux Dime Store Mysteries--both men have their hands full trying to keep "Dev" out of trouble.

Dev has I got this free from a blogger. Dev has numerous book and crafting groups that meet at her store. This month's book group has read a poet's book, but instead of lovely verse, the poet bashes everything about women and small towns.

Then he tries to hit on one of the book group members. His reward is murder. His body is found behind Dev's store.

Lots of fun romance and interesting competition amongst the characters in this book. Background information relates to the two previous books in this series, so I suggest reading them first.

Reminders of my times long ago in "five and dimes" made this book particularly interesting for me. Think Swanson has potential for lots more books in this fun series!

Mar 08, Diane rated it really liked it. I received this from Goodreads giveaway. I just finished this wonderful little book by Denise Swanson.

I have never read any of her books before. I know I will look forward to reading some other books by her. This book is a romance mixed with a mystery cozy read to it.

I loved the blend of characters, You can just picture this small town easy going people. The author just brought them to life for you.

We meet Dev who owns and runs a small shop in town and also who takes care of her sweet feisty gra I received this from Goodreads giveaway.

We meet Dev who owns and runs a small shop in town and also who takes care of her sweet feisty grandmother who you can not help but love. Dev has also has a love triangle going with two who are about ready to duck it out tow win her.

She really has to do something but does not want to hurt either one. Dev we find is having a hard time making ends meet and decides to open her shop up to several clubs in town.

She opens it up one night to a book club. The main speaker that night is not very gentleman like and storms out in a temper before the meeting has ended.

This is where things pick up and the next morning to Dev's surprise he is found dead behind her shop. Dev is scared what this will do to her shop and with the help of her two suitors she tries to find out who killed him.

You will laugh at the way things go and also will feel sorry for them at times. This book is just a lot of laughs. I found it a fun read Mar 10, Margaret rated it it was amazing Shelves: Denise Swanson has another winner.

Swanson second series, and it is good as the Scumble River Mysteries. This is the third one in the Devereaux's Dime Store Mysteries, but it can stand alone.

Dev Sinclair was a successful business woman who gives up her well paying job to come home and take care of her grandmother.

She opens a DIme Store and decides to let different clubs rent space supplement her income. With an obnoxious speaker for the Book Club, Dev is plunged into a murder after Denise Swanson has another winner.

With an obnoxious speaker for the Book Club, Dev is plunged into a murder after the speaker's body in found behind her store. Without giving anything way, Dev and her two boyfriends search for the killer who is complete surprise.

I usually can figure out the culprit but this one was a complete surprise. This is a wonderful cozy mystery. The romance in the book is fun.

Dev and her grandmother are delightful. Every series has to have a character you love to hate, and this is no exception. Swanson makes you care for her characters which makes this series for me.

Buy or check out of the library this book and enjoy a wonderful read. Mar 14, Anastasia rated it really liked it.

After giving a presentation to a book club at Devereaux's dime store, an obnoxious local poet and writer is found dead and dumped in the garbage behind the store.

I enjoyed the book and catching up with all the characters again and I liked the different narratives from the various characters.

The love triangle spoilt the book for me though and hopefully it will be resolved soon. I am looking forwar Dead between the lines by Denise Swanson is the 3rd book in a Devereaux Dime store Mystery series.

I am looking forward to reading the next book and seeing Devereaux's relationship with her father develop further, now that he has been released from prison.

Feb 06, Edel rated it it was amazing. When I started this series I did not think I could love a series as much as Denise's other series set in Scumble River, but I have fallen in love with this Deveraux Dime series and its characters , esp Deveraux who is a cool curvy chick.

In this book, book 3 in the series we meet some great characters and some down right horrible ones, plus Deveraux is practically fighting off the men as she has more then one man interested in her, add in a dead body and you have a fun filled read that is worth When I started this series I did not think I could love a series as much as Denise's other series set in Scumble River, but I have fallen in love with this Deveraux Dime series and its characters , esp Deveraux who is a cool curvy chick.

In this book, book 3 in the series we meet some great characters and some down right horrible ones, plus Deveraux is practically fighting off the men as she has more then one man interested in her, add in a dead body and you have a fun filled read that is worth setting some time aside for.

Fantastic book, loved it! I love every one of these books! Jul 18, Nancy H rated it liked it. A good mystery set in Deveraux's Dime Story, this story takes place when a man is murdered right after leaving a book club event in Dev's store.

She is called to come back to her store in the middle of the night, because the police found the man in a box right outside her back door.

The victim has offended many people in many ways, so there are many who would like to see him silenced. Jun 04, Mayda rated it really liked it Shelves: Dev owns and runs a dime store that really is much more.

She makes gift baskets to order, and hosts a variety of meetings, including a book discussion group. But things go awry at the discussion, and the guest speaker causes a ruckus with unfortunate results.

Trying to keep her store running smoothly while caring for her grandmother and dating two very eligible guys has Dev burning the midnight oil and then some.

Highly entertaining, this cozy is one for the books. Sep 14, Ali rated it it was ok Shelves: I liked this series when I first started it a few years ago, but I just couldn't get in to this story.

Maybe it's because I let too much time pass in between reading installments, but I struggled to get through it and it didn't capture my attention.

Oct 30, Sue rated it really liked it. Although the plot was a bit twisted, I really enjoyed all the idiosyncrasies of the folks in this book. I like the fact too that while the heroine did discover the murdered, she did not realize at the time that she was doing so.

Mar 05, Emily Ste rated it really liked it. Love me some Denise Swanson. Whether it's the Dime Store series or the Scumble River series, you can count me in.

My only request is that Devereaux pick between Jake or Noah already!! Dec 25, Sara Smith rated it really liked it. I liked this book the most so far in the series because it focused more on the mystery and less on the romantic entanglements of the detective.

Mar 06, Delores Alger rated it liked it. She writes a good cozie. Ok Not the best of this series. A bit heavy on the attraction to 2 men, which is best.

The murderer was all too evident. Oct 02, Sarah rated it it was amazing. Wonderful characters, wacky crimes, and a picturesque setting make these easy and fun to read.

I enjoyed this series continuation but it reminds me a lot of Hannah Swenson's situation with her two boyfriends one a dentist and one a cop series written by Joanne Fluke.

At least this series won't make me fat with all those yummy recipes. Mar 02, Tamara rated it really liked it Shelves: So, Dev is trying to make the money while the sun is shining- which is why she opens up the Dime Store to clubs for bit of extra cash.

The first book club meeting, though, may be the last- as the members get peeved with the author for his attitude toward women and small-town life.

Dev knew many were peeved when they left, but she did not know who was peeved enough to kill the author or why they did it- was it because of the book club meeting?

Or is there much more to this story? What Dev knows is this: With a little help from the good doctor, Noah, and the hunk-alicious Deputy US Marshall, Jake- Dev is sure to get to the bottom of this mess, quick, fast and in a hurry.

Which leaves her to think about other things- such as who is the yin to her yang? I enjoy the Dime Store Mystery series!

Dev has hit a groove with me in reading and I found myself not comparing to Scumble River as I have in the past. Getting to know Jake and Noah a bit, through their own thoughts and not the actions we see in the Dev chapters, added a bit to this book.

Right now, the love triangle with Dev, Noah and Jake is fine. A nice cozy mystery with some great characters. Definitely add this to the TBR list!

All thoughts and opinions are mine alone. The victim in this book is view spoiler [Lance Quistgaard, a poet who comes to Dev's Dime Store at the invitation of a book club.

He's found staked in the back with a fence post that came from Dev's store. Since she's worried about her store's rep, she begins investigating. These creatures had to be pacified by reciting the appropriate spells included in the Book of the Dead ; once pacified they posed no further threat, and could even extend their protection to the dead person.

If all the obstacles of the Duat could be negotiated, the deceased would be judged in the "Weighing of the Heart" ritual, depicted in Spell The deceased was led by the god Anubis into the presence of Osiris.

There, the dead person swore that he had not committed any sin from a list of 42 sins , [44] reciting a text known as the "Negative Confession".

Then the dead person's heart was weighed on a pair of scales, against the goddess Maat , who embodied truth and justice.

Maat was often represented by an ostrich feather, the hieroglyphic sign for her name. If the scales balanced, this meant the deceased had led a good life.

Anubis would take them to Osiris and they would find their place in the afterlife, becoming maa-kheru , meaning "vindicated" or "true of voice".

This scene is remarkable not only for its vividness but as one of the few parts of the Book of the Dead with any explicit moral content.

The judgment of the dead and the Negative Confession were a representation of the conventional moral code which governed Egyptian society.

For every "I have not John Taylor points out the wording of Spells 30B and suggests a pragmatic approach to morality; by preventing the heart from contradicting him with any inconvenient truths, it seems that the deceased could enter the afterlife even if their life had not been entirely pure.

A Book of the Dead papyrus was produced to order by scribes. They were commissioned by people in preparation for their own funeral, or by the relatives of someone recently deceased.

They were expensive items; one source gives the price of a Book of the Dead scroll as one deben of silver, [51] perhaps half the annual pay of a labourer.

In one case, a Book of the Dead was written on second-hand papyrus. Most owners of the Book of the Dead were evidently part of the social elite; they were initially reserved for the royal family, but later papyri are found in the tombs of scribes, priests and officials.

Most owners were men, and generally the vignettes included the owner's wife as well. Towards the beginning of the history of the Book of the Dead , there are roughly 10 copies belonging to men for every one for a woman.

The dimensions of a Book of the Dead could vary widely; the longest is 40m long while some are as short as 1m. The scribes working on Book of the Dead papyri took more care over their work than those working on more mundane texts; care was taken to frame the text within margins, and to avoid writing on the joints between sheets.

The words peret em heru , or 'coming forth by day' sometimes appear on the reverse of the outer margin, perhaps acting as a label.

Books were often prefabricated in funerary workshops, with spaces being left for the name of the deceased to be written in later.

The text of a New Kingdom Book of the Dead was typically written in cursive hieroglyphs , most often from left to right, but also sometimes from right to left.

The hieroglyphs were in columns, which were separated by black lines — a similar arrangement to that used when hieroglyphs were carved on tomb walls or monuments.

Illustrations were put in frames above, below, or between the columns of text. The largest illustrations took up a full page of papyrus.

From the 21st Dynasty onward, more copies of the Book of the Dead are found in hieratic script. The calligraphy is similar to that of other hieratic manuscripts of the New Kingdom; the text is written in horizontal lines across wide columns often the column size corresponds to the size of the papyrus sheets of which a scroll is made up.

Occasionally a hieratic Book of the Dead contains captions in hieroglyphic. The text of a Book of the Dead was written in both black and red ink, regardless of whether it was in hieroglyphic or hieratic script.

Most of the text was in black, with red ink used for the titles of spells, opening and closing sections of spells, the instructions to perform spells correctly in rituals, and also for the names of dangerous creatures such as the demon Apep.

The style and nature of the vignettes used to illustrate a Book of the Dead varies widely. Some contain lavish colour illustrations, even making use of gold leaf.

Others contain only line drawings, or one simple illustration at the opening. Book of the Dead papyri were often the work of several different scribes and artists whose work was literally pasted together.

The existence of the Book of the Dead was known as early as the Middle Ages, well before its contents could be understood. Since it was found in tombs, it was evidently a document of a religious nature, and this led to the widespread misapprehension that the Book of the Dead was the equivalent of a Bible or Qur'an.

In Karl Richard Lepsius published a translation of a manuscript dated to the Ptolemaic era and coined the name " Book of The Dead" das Todtenbuch.

He also introduced the spell numbering system which is still in use, identifying different spells. The work of E. Wallis Budge , Birch's successor at the British Museum, is still in wide circulation — including both his hieroglyphic editions and his English translations of the Papyrus of Ani , though the latter are now considered inaccurate and out-of-date.

Allen and Raymond O. Orientverlag has released another series of related monographs, Totenbuchtexte , focused on analysis, synoptic comparison, and textual criticism.

Research work on the Book of the Dead has always posed technical difficulties thanks to the need to copy very long hieroglyphic texts. Initially, these were copied out by hand, with the assistance either of tracing paper or a camera lucida.

In the midth century, hieroglyphic fonts became available and made lithographic reproduction of manuscripts more feasible.

In the present day, hieroglyphics can be rendered in desktop publishing software and this, combined with digital print technology, means that the costs of publishing a Book of the Dead may be considerably reduced.

However, a very large amount of the source material in museums around the world remains unpublished. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
